The AgroBioTech Research Centre is part of the Horizont2020 project, which focuses on algae and their effects on the treatment of inflammation and pain.

IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease) prevalence has been increasing in the last decades, especially in developed countries. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) currently affects approximately 6.8 million people worldwide. It is a chronic disease that leads to severe pain, exhaustion and in some cases colon cancer. Despite the existence of therapies, not every patient responds well to them, which makes people suffering from this disease nervous and stressed. What if the solution lies in our oceans, rivers and lakes? Numerous algae species produce an almost infinite number of compounds. Many of these molecules have health-beneficial effects. For example, they can relieve inflammation and block pain. In the Algae4IBD project, experts from various fields look at this untapped potential. They will study seaweed and microalgae to find new solutions to Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and other forms of IBD.

Algae4IBD will develop new treatments with bioactive molecules that contain algae as key ingredient; functional foods and both medicine in the hope of improving the lives of IBD patients worldwide.
